Update on FU-230

After owning the 230 for 4 months now I thought it about time to write a summary of it's performance. Since purchasing, I have also got the bed extension swing away kit, a Vicmarc 100 and 120 chuck, shark jaws and step jaws. All combined, this has made an amazing difference to my enjoyment in turning. The lathe and peripheral equipment have not missed a beat. Even running at 2000 RPM on low torque it is still very quiet. The additional 240v outlets on the invertor have proved very useful when using sanders etc.

There is one negative, and it's a very small one. With the open ended nature of the spindle housing near the turning wheel, the inside and pulley wheels tend to pull in quite a bit of dust. I periodically put fresh tape around the spindle to try and block the hole. The inclusion of a brush around the aperture would probably stop this.

P.S. could probably do with a stronger paint finish as well

Fantastic machine real quality

I spent some time researching which lathe to buy and after much consideration decided on the FU230. I attended the Woodworking show in Harrogate in November and after conversations with Simion Hope and Darren Breeze who was demonstrating the machines I bought the FU230 there and then. Simon gave good information and some advice as well as a good deal.
Setting the lathe up, was fairly straight forward as long as there are 2 or more assistants. The headstock is reassuringly heavy, It runs extremely smoothly and has many feature that make this stand out from the other contenders.
I look forward to many happy hours of turning.

FU-230

What a step up from my previous lathe, which was a decent one in itself. The build quality is excellent. Easy to put together except for the heavy headstock, so get some help?. I particularly like the fact that once the headstock is aligned and the end bracket/stop is adjusted to fit, you never have to fiddle with re alignment again. It has a nice long tool rest and a lovely long banjo which means you can swivel the head to a certain degree and still turn off the main bed. I suspect this will be the last lathe I have to buy.

Engineered to perfection, worth every penny.

This was an early retirement present to myself and I couldn't be happier. The lathe is a massive step up from my old Record CL4, with every operation being easier and more precise. The compact design, spindle lock and smooth banjo movement being my favourite features. Engineering quality is superb and I'm sure it will serve me well for many years to come. Worth every penny.

So pleased

I’m a relatively new woodturner and have much to learn. I decided to move up from a bench top lathe and after much research decided the FU230 was the one for me.
The service and help from the team here, matched the product. Superb!
The lathe itself is on another level in comparison to my previous one. The speed control is so smooth and quality of engineering shows through in every aspect of operation.
If you are considering one of these, make a visit to Hopes and reassure yourself that this is money extremely well spent. You won’t be disappointed.

Excellent lathe, great service from Simon Hope.

I got good advice from Simon on the phone before buying the lathe earlier this year. I’ve had some time now to really try it out and I’m getting on well with it. The move from a small beginners lathe to this has really made a difference.

Lovely piece of engineering, superb choice.

I invested in this lathe after much careful consideration and was eventually persuaded after seeing Mike Waldt's YouTube video reviewing his Stratos lathe. I could not be happier. It represents a very significant investment for me for what is essentially a hobby machine, but the quality shines through. It is robust, quiet. powerful and has some really nice touches. I like to turn quite large, out of balance pieces, retaining as many of the natural features of the wood as possible, and the weight combined with the excellent variable speed control allows me to do this. SImon is extremely helpful and replied to my queries promptly and courteously. I purchased one of his laser hollowing jigs at the same times, as well as a few new tools and other odds and ends, all of which have proved very satisfactory.

Excellent Choice

I bought this lathe about 2 years ago from Arizona Silhouette after watching an excellent YouTube video by Mike Wahl. I had planned to buy the Powermatic but the cost was almost $1000 more for one with similar features. I could not be more pleased with my choice! It has performed flawlessly. Has more than enough power although I have not turned anything larger than 18". Smooth as silk and runs all day without any complaints.

An excellent lathe!

I bought one of these lathes after having been over to Hope Woodturning to view their different lathes. I have now owned it for about 3 months and have turned a variety of different items from pens to out of balance bowls. I cannot find anything negative to say about it. Delivery was prompt and efficient and it came very well packaged from the manufacturer. Clear instructions were provided for assembly, although there was a great tip from HWT to suggest assembling with the lathe bed upside down and fitting the legs on rather than what the instructions suggested. One tiny niggle was that 2 of the bolt holes for attaching the vari-speed box were not in line. It is a VERY solid piece of kit, really robust. I have had some out of balance pieces on but the weight of the machine combined with the excellent speed control means that this can be managed very well. There are some really nice features on the machine such as the rack which holds tools/drive spurs etc and the 'walk about' magnetic speed control. Overall a fantastic bit of kit.

Excellent lathe, good value for the money

A very well thought out lathe, offers every thing you could possibly require from a lathe of this capacity. The extension bed adds an excellent benefit and if you are into giant bowls, the ability to bolt on the extension bed in any of 3 positions is another bonus. With the two speed easily changed drive belt system the motor provides plenty of power. The down side it is not provided with a 150mm tool rest. Other wise perfect.
